Dryland Seed is grass that is used to grow the pasture land, and outside of snow melt and rainwater, does not require any outside irrigation. It can be grown with hardly any effort. For optimal conditions, evaluate the type of growing zone you’ll be working on, and based off of that, pick either a cool season or warm season grass blend that will be sure to thrive in the dryland pasture conditions. Ensure the land has no debris such as rocks, weeds, or soil clumps. If your pasture grasses are planted in soil that isn’t hard enough, it won’t establish quick enough and will be less dense.
The seeds should be planted in spring in order to allow the seeds time to germinate before the warm weather comes. This allows the seeds to thrive off the water of the remaining snow melt and grow even quicker. They should be planted at least an half inch or less into the soil for optimal growth. This can be done by using a broadcast seeder, or if you prefer, and drill and seed agitator. Animals should not graze on the area the grass was planted until well after the pasture growth has been secured. Depending on if your pasture was properly prepared and sowed, this could be in as little as a couple months, but could be up to or over a year if the proper preparations were not made.
