Food Recall Notice
Voluntary Recall — Sprouting Seed Products Containing Alfalfa, Seed Lot SAL2-24JB
Check the lot number on your package
Every package we sell has its seed lot number printed on the description label, in the field marked Lot No:
- Your product is affected if that field reads any one of these codes:
- Lot No: SAL2-24JB
- TS-245-MIX-13 (ONLY 13)
- TS-111-MIX-13 (ONLY 13)
- TS-633-2
- TS-229-4-MK
- TS-VARSPRT-1
- TS-1462-2.5-4
- TS-1462-5-3 Read the whole code, including the digits at the end. Only mix lots ending in -13 are recalled. A package reading TS-245-MIX, TS-111-MIX, TS-245, or TS-111 is a different production run and is not affected.
- If you cannot find a lot number on your package, or it is unreadable, contact us anyway. We can look it up from your order. Do not use the seed until we confirm.
Your product is also not affected if the field reads SAL2-23JD, SAL2-25JC, or SAL-25JF.
You do not need to guess based on when you ordered. The lot number on the package is the answer.
What is being recalled
Our seed supplier, International Specialty Supply (International Sprout Holdings, Inc.) of Cookeville, Tennessee, recalled one lot of raw alfalfa sprouting seed — lot SAL2-24JB. We buy raw seed from them, repack it into our own retail packages, and sell it. We are passing that recall through to our customers.
The recall was published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in its Enforcement Report on September 10, 2026.
We packed seed from this lot and other unaffected lots, between January 5, 2026 and May 22, 2026. Orders placed on this website that may contain affected product were shipped between January 10 and May 12, 2026. Again — the lot number on your package is what matters, not the order date.
Products that may contain seed from this lot, but PLEASE check the lot number, not just the title:
- Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds — all sizes
- Broccoli and Friends Sprouting Seed Mix — all sizes
- Sprouting Seed Mix: Broccoli, Radish, Alfalfa — all sizes
The broccoli, radish, clover, mustard, cabbage and mung bean seed in these mixes is not subject to any recall. Only the alfalfa component from lot SAL2-24JB is affected. Fenugreek, wheatgrass, cat grass and our other single-variety seeds are not part of this recall.
Why it is being recalled
The recall was initiated after our seed supplier notified us that the seeds were identified through traceback as seed used by a sprout grower whose finished sprouts were part of an FDA investigation involving a multistate foodborne illness outbreak of multiple strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (multiple serotypes include: O26:H11, O103:H25, O168:H8) and Salmonella Agona infections. Our supplier also notified us of a spent irrigation water sample from one of its alfalfa seed lots tested positive for E. coli.
Sprouting matters here. The warm, moist conditions needed to germinate seed are also good conditions for bacteria to multiply, and sprouts are usually eaten raw. That is why a finding like this one is taken seriously even though it was found in water rather than in the seed itself.
The health risk
Some strains of E. coli can cause serious illness. Symptoms usually begin three to four days after exposure and can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea which is often bloody, and vomiting.
A small number of people — most often children under five, adults over sixty-five, and anyone with a weakened immune system — can develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.
If you have sprouted or eaten product from this lot and you feel unwell, contact your doctor. Tell them you may have been exposed to E. coli from raw sprouts.
What to do if you have affected product
- Do not sprout it and do not eat it. If you have sprouts growing from this seed right now, throw them out.
- Throw the seed away. Please do not mail it back to us. Seal the package in a bag and put it in your household trash. Sending seed with a suspected contaminant back through the mail creates a handling risk, and we do not need the package returned to give you a refund. Before disposing of any seed, verify the lot number to avoid throwing away seed that is not subject to this limited recall.
- Clean up. Wash any jars, lids, trays, screens or sprouting equipment that touched the seed with hot soapy water, then sanitize them — a solution of one tablespoon of unscented household bleach in one gallon of water works. Wipe down counters and any surface the seed touched. Wash your hands.
Refund or replacement — we handle this directly, wherever you bought it
This applies to everyone — whether you bought from this website or from us on Amazon. We are handling all recall refunds and replacements ourselves. Amazon will send you back here, so please come to us first.
Email todd@toddsseeds.com and tell us:
- The lot number printed on your package — or that you no longer have the package, or cannot find a lot number on it
- Where you bought it — this website or Amazon
- Your order number if you have it handy (if you don’t, tell us roughly when you ordered — we will try to work with you, if it was bought off of Amazon the order number helps us find you fastest – your order number is in the safety notice sent our by Amazon, or in your Order History. If you can’t locate it, write anyway and we’ll work it out.)
- Whether you would prefer a replacement from current unaffected stock, or a refund
There is no deadline. Do not mail anything back. If you already threw the package away because we told you to, that is completely fine — say so and we will take care of you.
We are answering every message. Volume is heavy right now, so a reply may take a day. If you have written to us and not heard back within 48 hours, write again or call — we would rather get a duplicate than miss you.
If your label shows a different lot number — SAL2-23JD, SAL2-25JC, SAL-25-JF or anything other than SAL2-24JB — your package is not part of this recall and it is fine to use. Write to us anyway if you would like us to confirm it; we would rather answer a hundred of those than have one person throw out good seed or eat affected seed.
