What is being recalled

Our seed supplier, International Specialty Supply (International Sprout Holdings, Inc.) of Cookeville, Tennessee, recalled one lot of raw alfalfa sprouting seed — lot SAL2-24JB. We buy raw seed from them, repack it into our own retail packages, and sell it. We are passing that recall through to our customers.

The recall was published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in its Enforcement Report on September 10, 2026.

We packed seed from this lot between January 5, 2026 and May 22, 2026. Orders placed on this website that may contain affected product were shipped between January 10 and May 12, 2026. Again — the lot number on your package is what matters, not the order date.

The broccoli, radish, clover, mustard, cabbage and mung bean seed in these mixes is not subject to any recall. Only the alfalfa component from lot SAL2-24JB is affected.

Why it is being recalled

Our supplier reported a positive E. coli result on a spent irrigation water sample associated with this seed lot, and recalled the lot as a precaution.

Sprouting matters here. The warm, moist conditions needed to germinate seed are also good conditions for bacteria to multiply, and sprouts are usually eaten raw. That is why a finding like this one is taken seriously even though it was found in water rather than in the seed itself.

The health risk

Some strains of E. coli can cause serious illness. Symptoms usually begin three to four days after exposure and can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea which is often bloody, and vomiting.

A small number of people — most often children under five, adults over sixty-five, and anyone with a weakened immune system — can develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

If you have sprouted or eaten product from this lot and you feel unwell, contact your doctor. Tell them you may have been exposed to E. coli from raw sprouts.

To date we have not received a single report of illness from any customer in connection with these products. That is not a reason to take a chance with a package you still have.

What to do if you have affected product

1. Do not sprout it and do not eat it. If you have sprouts growing from this seed right now, throw them out.
2. Throw the seed away. Please do not mail it back to us. Seal the package in a bag and put it in your household trash. Sending seed with a suspected contaminant back through the mail creates a handling risk and we do not need the package returned to give you a refund.
3. Clean up. Wash any jars, lids, trays, screens or sprouting equipment that touched the seed with hot soapy water, then sanitize them — a solution of one tablespoon of unscented household bleach in one gallon of water works. Wipe down counters and any surface the seed touched. Wash your hands.

Refund or replacement

If you bought from this website: email us at todd@toddsseeds.com or call (248) 206-3200 with your order number and tell us whether you would prefer a refund or a replacement from current, unaffected stock. Your choice. There is no deadline and you do not need to send anything back or provide a receipt beyond the order number. If you have already thrown the package away, that is fine — tell us and we will take care of it.

If you bought on Amazon: check the lot number on your package the same way, and dispose of it the same way if it reads SAL2-24JB. Refunds for Amazon orders are handled through Amazon, so please contact them for that. You are still welcome to contact us with any question about the recall, the lot coding, or anything else — we will answer.

We notified every customer we could identify individually by email on September 11, 2026, and we have reported this recall to the FDA and to Amazon. We are sorry. Sprouting seed is a product people buy because they want to eat something fresh and healthy, and we would rather lose the sale than have you take a risk with a package sitting in your kitchen.
